Abstract

In recent years, History of Archaeology has been growing internationally as a field of study. This paper seeks to analyze its development in Portugal according to four different frames: history, dimensions, methods and perspectives. Our goal is to present History of Archaeology as a field of great potential to critically examine the practice of archaeology. In order to do so, we will provide a holistic and interdisciplinary perspective that accounts for chronological periods, archaeologists and questions. We argue that this exercise is crucial to understand the place of archaeology within the sciences and society.
